It was the second day of racing in Spain, Piers took the day off so I helmed. I was so excited and nervous before hand but it was so good. I’m relatively unexperienced compared to the fleet in every sense, especially as for most of my sailing career I’ve been a crew. But I’ve trained a bit in the Diam as a helm and was feeling pretty excited to give it a go. I found it quite hard but thought we had a good day racing. There were points where we were racing against the top boats, like SFS and Oman, which was awesome as they are top sailors. It was so hard to get our own space on the start line and I completely botched it on one of them but actually had a couple of really good starts that put us in the top third going round the first mark. Unfortunately on the first race, we had an incident on the last mark rounding where the jury ruled against us so we had to do a turn which lost us three places. I’m convinced the jury weren’t watching the incident though because we were 100% not in the wrong. The second race we had a good result but in the third a boat with no rights came crashing into the leeward mark causing a big pile up where we did the best we probably could have done in the situation but unfortunately we came out much worst after the incident. Rightly so the boat that caused it all got disqualified from the race. The last race we nailed the start and had good race. I was happy with the team’s performance today as we were working well together and we were competitive. I have much to learn still and hope I get to helm again at some point during the tour as it was so much fun. Think this may have been one of my best days so far.
